So I Am Not Crazy....Maybe

For almost a year now I have been stressing about how little Easton talks and lacks making different sounds. I kept asking his doctor and every time I did she would send me to the hospital for blood work because he is small according to the charts. (You would never think that he is small by looking at him:) All of the blood work came back normal and I just got so frustrated that she wasn't listening to what I was saying that I finally changed pediatricians. His new doctor has 4 kids that are very similar in age to my children. I love the fact that he is parenting at the same level I am. At Easton's 18 month appointment Dr. Johnson told me that 2 of his kids were fast talkers and two have not been. He told me he didn't think that there was anything to be worried about but that we should check his ears just to be sure. There was fluid in his ears in February and March, so in May I took Easton to an ENT. His hearing test came back great. Some of the noises scared Easton to death and it was kind of comical to watch the hearing test.
So by July he still is not talking other than mom, car, truck, and a few other random words, so I finally just called a speech therapist. She came and assessed Easton. Apparently he speaks less than 1% of the average child...meaning he really does need some help. Finally.....someone thinks I am not crazy! Hopefully speech therapy will help him learn to talk quickly. I can't wait to know what is going on in his little mind!

I completely understand!! I had the same concerns about Tyler. I have been fighting with speech therapists and their stupid tests for 18 months. Finally two weeks ago they agreed that he needs help articulating words!! Seriously...us Moms know our kids...we know more than "professionals" let on. Glad you could get things worked out for Easton!

Good for you for being so persistant. I am sure that speech therapy will help-it worked wonders for Alex.

We went through the same thing with Bryn- who is now 2. We finally found a doctor who said "yeah, she should be talking more at this age"- she was 18 months. Her problems turned out to me more severe than just not talking- but still, it was such a relief to finally find someone who saw what I saw.

I bet you are relieved to have someone finally understand what you are talking about. That's so good that he is going to see a speech therapist now, rather then let him get bigger and try. We hope everything goes good! Keep us posted.

Call me, we need to talk. I went through the same thing with Kaige. He was less than 1% too. He started working with the school district, and picked it up so quick, but then didn't qualify for more help when he turned 3. I thought he needed more, so I had our Doc write a referral to Primarys. Best thing that I did. It was wonderful. People are surprised to find out he went to speech because he is great now. I did so much research and talked to so many language pathologists. Primary has a great program out of Sandy, as does the U of U, Call me and I would love to talk with you about it. I know what you are going through and exactly how you feel. Seriously, call if you want to talk.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, because I have been wondering the same thing about Talin. I keep comparing him to Jaden cause she was so much further ahead. I hope everything works
